Key Issues
Relying on our extensive experience in the Logistics
disciplines; we have identified several issues as being most critical to the
future of many organizations. The following identifies some of
these
issues and the assistance that LRM can provide in
improving
current operations.
Inventory Management Systems - An effective
inventory
management system can result in significant direct and
indirect
savings. An organization must maintain, or have immediate
access to sufficient purchased and manufactured components
and raw
material inventories to ensure smooth production and to
compensate for
errors in forecasted demands. It also needs to maintain inventory
levels, which comply with the company's service requirements and
inventory investment policy. Adequate controls over physical inventory
reduce loss from theft and ensure that the
company's records correctly
reflect transactions. In today's
dynamic business environment, a
firm's inventory requirements
must interface with the systems of their
suppliers, whether or not
they are sourcing from a distributor or
manufacturer and regardless of whether they own or contract with the
source.
Just-in-time (JIT)
and Quick Response concepts have gained creditability and popularity
at all stages of the distribution
channel. There is even the danger
that the customers of wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers will
demand JIT supports from their suppliers before these suppliers are
able to adequately supply it. The impact of JIT and Quick Response is
anticipated to include:
- Compressed order cycle time.
- Increased inventory turns for
customers.
- Increased sales because high volume
items are always in stock.
- Foster closer relationships between
wholesaler, distributor, manufacturer and end users.
- Risk of stock outs, or conversely,
the risk of higher inventory farther back in the distribution
channel.
- Complicate and increase cost of
transportation.
The net effect of the end-customer
employing JIT concepts is -
increased pressures on the
manufacturer; wholesaler and distributor's inventory management
capabilities. Likewise, the anticipated increase in service level
requirements will also
mandate significant changes in the way suppliers do
business
(i.e. sales, marketing and operations).
